The BioVision team has been supplying imaging solutions enabling minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery since 2001, and has supplied custom micro-endoscopic systems to a leading orthopedic company. In our work for this client, the BioVision team developed and commercialized the idea of a disposable arthroscope and a fully integrated tower built to the client's specifications. Biovision designed and manufactured the entire system on a very aggressive timeline. Our client now has full manufacturing control of the tower and Biovison's core endoscope technology is available to them as needed.
The concept of a disposable arthroscope grew out of our innovative manufacturing technology, cost-effective global sourcing, and efficient manufacturing processes and practices, which had allowed drastic slashing of per-scope costs. This, in turn, potentially allowed procedures to be done in an office setting where sterilization was not an option. In addition, autoclavable scopes of the small size necessary for minimally invasive procedures are highly subject to breakage. A disposable scope allowed a cost structure that took such routine breakage into account. To date, the BioVision team has supplied more than 10,000 disposable arthroscopes, and is in discussions with this and other suppliers of arthroscopic products, regarding potential expansions for this product line.
